Background Info

Prairie West Park is St. John Indiana’s largest park in terms of land area and in terms of quantity of playground equipment.

To the locals, this park is often call “The park on 93rd.”  My family calls this park “The park where we had Wyatt’s birthday party,” because we had my son Wyatt’s birthday party here some years ago.  My kids have aged out of park visits (sniffle, sniffle), but when we did go to parks, Prairie West Park was the favored park to go to (and then also Northgate Park in Dyer Indiana).  I also need to mention that the largest park equipment in the area is at Lemon Lake County Park in Cedar Lake.

  • Swings
  • Pavilion (that you can rent for events)
  • Picnic tables and benches

Parking Lot

View of the parking lot. There’s about 100 parking stalls on a paved parking lot.

Dog Waste Station

The park is dog friendly and provides a dog waste bag station.

Bathrooms

A heated bathroom building with a separate men’s and women’s bathroom.

Playground Equipment

The playground equipment at Prairie West Park is high quality, and there’s a lot of different equipment to keep kids engaged for hours.  The playground equipment is spread out, and on a rubber floor, which makes a great location for playing tag.  In the middle of the playround is a picnic table and a couple benches, which makes a great spot for parents to relax and be able to keep an eye on their kids while they play.  As an adult, I had a blast at this park also since the park equipment was large enough for me as a 6’4″ adult to traverse the playground as well.

2 Slides

The large playground has a large long straight slide and a spiral slide.

ADA Handicap Ramp

The large park is ADA accessible where wheel chairs can traverse the playground.

Climbing Wall

The climbing wall has three different panels that take you from ground level to the top of the first level.

Double Slide

Long Slide

This view shows how long the long slide is, which starts from the second level of the tower structure.

Tower

The tower is pretty fun for kids and adults.  To get to the second level you have to climb up an inner ladder.

Swings

At the swings there are 2 ADA swings, 2 regular swings, and 2 full bucket baby swings.

Seesaw

I’m not sure what exactly this is called, my best guess is a seesaw for 4 people.  What makes this extra fun is that it rotates in all directions.

Sway Fun

This “sway fun” works by sliding back and forth, much like a glider swing.  3 people easily fit on each bench.

Smaller Playground For Younger Kids

For the little tikes, there is a second smaller playground.  This playground is also easily traversable for adults, which makes it great to be able to play with your little ones without having to cram into little spaces.

2 Slides

Climbing Wall & Stairs

Fishing Pond

The fishing must be pretty good at Prairie West Park because on sunny days you will most always find people fishing around the pond.  The pond is at least a few acres in area, so there’s lots of shore to have plenty of space to fish.

View from North to South

At this photo I’m standing at the northwest corner of the house looking south.

View from South to North

This view shows the pond from the south end looking north.  The pond is filled from the south end with the storm sewer shown.

Pavilion

The pavilion is a great place to rent out to hold an event.  Some years ago we rented the pavilion for our son’s birthday party.  There is plenty of space under roof to have a large gathering, and the park keeps the kids occupied.  There is power at the pavilion so you can power food devices, radios, and all your party needs.  Click here to go to the Town of St. John pavilion rental page.  As of the time of this post, the rental fee is $50 for non-profit events and $100 for for-profit events, with a security deposit of $100 deposit.

Overall View

This photo shows the overall view of the pavilion.  The pavilion is pretty good sized, has power, and us under roof.
