Prairie West Park is St. John Indiana’s largest park in terms of land area and in terms of quantity of playground equipment.
To the locals, this park is often call “The park on 93rd.” My family calls this park “The park where we had Wyatt’s birthday party,” because we had my son Wyatt’s birthday party here some years ago. My kids have aged out of park visits (sniffle, sniffle), but when we did go to parks, Prairie West Park was the favored park to go to (and then also Northgate Park in Dyer Indiana). I also need to mention that the largest park equipment in the area is at Lemon Lake County Park in Cedar Lake.
Some of the features of Prairie West Park include:
A view of the large playground. A playground for smaller kids and other playground equipment is on the other side of this playground.
The playground equipment at Prairie West Park is high quality, and there’s a lot of different equipment to keep kids engaged for hours. The playground equipment is spread out, and on a rubber floor, which makes a great location for playing tag. In the middle of the playround is a picnic table and a couple benches, which makes a great spot for parents to relax and be able to keep an eye on their kids while they play. As an adult, I had a blast at this park also since the park equipment was large enough for me as a 6’4″ adult to traverse the playground as well.
The climbing wall has three different panels that take you from ground level to the top of the first level.

This view shows how long the long slide is, which starts from the second level of the tower structure.
The tower is pretty fun for kids and adults. To get to the second level you have to climb up an inner ladder.
I’m not sure what exactly this is called, my best guess is a seesaw for 4 people. What makes this extra fun is that it rotates in all directions.
For the little tikes, there is a second smaller playground. This playground is also easily traversable for adults, which makes it great to be able to play with your little ones without having to cram into little spaces.
The fishing must be pretty good at Prairie West Park because on sunny days you will most always find people fishing around the pond. The pond is at least a few acres in area, so there’s lots of shore to have plenty of space to fish.
The pavilion is a great place to rent out to hold an event. Some years ago we rented the pavilion for our son’s birthday party. There is plenty of space under roof to have a large gathering, and the park keeps the kids occupied. There is power at the pavilion so you can power food devices, radios, and all your party needs. Click here to go to the Town of St. John pavilion rental page. As of the time of this post, the rental fee is $50 for non-profit events and $100 for for-profit events, with a security deposit of $100 deposit.
Prairie West Park has walking trails at the park, which is great for getting your steps in while your kids are playing or fishing. The park is also connected to the network of paved trails that go throughout St. John and connect other parks and subdivisions.
